Matthew 27:12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.
Matthew 27:13 Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?”
Matthew 27:14 But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
Although Jesus had an opportunity to open his mouth and defend his righteousness, he chose to remain silent. As they they cursed him and spat on him on the cross, because of his love for mankind, he remained silent.
Jesus teaching and example helps us to determine when to speak and when to remain silent. John English Lee, in his sermon ” When to keep silent” helps us to know when to speak and when remain silent:
Be silent when you cannot control what you say ( Pro 29:11)
Be silent until you’ve heard the end of a matter(Pro 18:13)
Be silent when you haven’t verified the story (Deu 17:16)
Be silent when your words will offend a weaker brother(1Co 8:11)
Be silent when you are tempted to make light of the holy things ( Ecc 5:2)
Be silent when you are tempted to joke about sin (Pro 14:9)
Be silent if the issue is none of your business ( Pro 26:7)
Be silent if your words will damage someone else reputation ( Pro 17:27 Pro 6:14 )
Be silent when your words will damage a friendship (Pro 16:28)
Be silent when you are feeling critical (Jam 3:9,Pro 30:14)
Be silent in the heat of anger ( Pro 18:21)
Be silent when you may eat your words later (Pro 18:21)
Be silent if you have said it more than one time (Pro 19:13)
Be silent when it’s time to listen ( Pro 13:1)
Be silent when you are tempted to flatter a wicked person ( Pro 24:24)
