Isa 41:14-15 “Do not be afraid, you worm Jacob, little Israel, do not fear, for I myself will help you,” declares the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. ‘See, I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them, and reduce the hills to chaff.
God is speaking to Israel and He refers them as a “worm.” This shows how vulnerable and helplessness they were before their enemies. Their current state of affairs was not final. Despite their proneness, God promised to change them into something powerful – a “threshing sledge”. A threshing sledge was a powerful agricultural tool used to separate grain from chaff.
God was aware of their weakness. That’s why He told them “Do not be afraid, you worm Jacob…” God’s choice of the word “worm” is meant to highlight Israel’s humble state. We know that worms are fragile and defenseless creatures. Similarly, Israel was small and weak compared to the great nations that were surrounding them.
The same God can do a similar transformation in our lives. Despite the feelings of inadequacy, God can make us into a “threshing sledge.” He did it for Moses, a reluctant leader with a stutter but was turned into a deliverer. Gideon, the least in his family, was used to defeat a mighty army. Finally, but not the least, God transformed Peter into a bold preacher of the gospel despite having denied Jesus. From today, you are not a “worm” but God’s threshing sledge.
