2Co 10:18 For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends
To commend means to formally praise or mention with approval someone or something ( Cambrige Dictionary)
The Corinthian church had begun developing an attitude of despising and treating Paul with contempt. They were saying that his physical appearance and speech was not as impressive as his powerful letters.
He had to remind them that he was not out to commend himself to them for acceptance but was a messenger of God, whom God himself had commended to take on this Gospel for which he was in chains.
According to the world systems, in order to be given a job or an assignment, one has to write an impressive resume highlighting his/her achievements and stating why they are best qualified for that particular opportunity. He/she further goes to mention referees who would give a recommendation on this particular individual.But for matters of faith, instead of praising or commending ourselves, we should strive to approve ourselves to God, and his approbation will be our best commendation.(Matthew Henry Comm.)
The giants of faith in the Bible whom God commended did great exploits as the Lord enabled them.As servants of God, we should seek to be approved and commended by God, which will be a true testament to carry out his assignment which he gives us sufficient grace and ability to perform .Let us study to show ourselves approved unto God, workmen that need not be ashamed.
