Luk 16:22 “So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.
Luk 16:23 “And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Lazarus in Hebrew means a man destitute of help, needy and poor. This man was not only afflicted by poverty but also with loathsome and offensive ulcers such as often are accompaniments of poverty and want. He was laid at the gate of the rich man in order that he may obtain aid
These circumstances are very touching and contrasted sharply with that of the rich man. There was no provision made for the helpless poor in those days and consequently, they were laid at the gates of the rich and in places of public resort for charity.
Christian friends, although most of us pay a lot of attention to the sins of commission , failure to do what is expected of us eg feeding the hungry, visiting the sick and those in prison, clothing the naked , taking care of the widows, the aged, the vulnerable etc is equally sinful. It is my prayer that we shall not receive eternal condemnation for failure to partake the obligations expected of us.
