Deut:8:1-3 “Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers. 2 And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.
The children of Israel were being reminded of God’s commandments. This was prior to them entering the promised land. Before entering the land of promise, they were made to wander in the wilderness for forty years. The forty years in the wilderness was partly a punishment of Israel for her disobedience. (Num.14:26-35) It was also a time for the Lord to humble and test them.
The wandering of the Israelites in the wilderness had a Godly purpose. (Holman study Bible, NKJV edition). This was intended to determine the quality of their character and their commitment to obedience. God also wanted to know what was in their hearts.
There is a period in life when we usually feel as though we’re being delayed. We don’t enter into our destiny as we might have desired. This is the period God is humbling and testing us for His good intended purpose. He wants to know what is in our hearts.
Any moment God deals with us is not a waste. His intention is to bring out the best in us. What we are required to do is to cooperate with Him. Let’s desire to learn something new in every way possible when God purposes to humble us.
