Hab 3:17 Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines; though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; though the flock be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls– Hab 3:18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.
The text above paints a picture where nothing meaningful seems to be happening. After the invasion, the Chaldeans left the country uncultivated, bare and devastating. This led to unproductivity and hopelessness.
Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall the fruit be in the vines, the labor of the olive shall fail, and the field shall yield no meat, the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no heard in the stalls ( Geneva Study Bible), – He speaks not of partial failure, but of the entire loss of all things.
But Habakkuk declares, ” Hab 3:18,19 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my savior. The sovereign LORD is my strength, he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights. ” Even when everything is gone, Our God is reliable and will still supply all our needs. He is Emanuel, God together with us.
