Col 2:15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
The historical background to this was a triumph parade into Rome by a victorious general. Victorious generals paraded their captives and the seized treasure behind them. Sweet incense was offered. The citizens saw and smelled evidence of victory.
This is what Christ did when he died on the cross and rose again. He disarmed these principalities and powers. He humiliated these spiritual rulers of darkness in a public spectacle of shame and defeat. Having disarmed them, he paraded them in public behind him in his triumphal procession!
Christian friends, we fight from victory and not for victory. We face a formidable but a defeated foe. The weakest of all believers has the power and the capacity to overcome the forces of wickedness raised against him. Rom 8:37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
