1Sa 18:3 And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.
1Sa 18:4 Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.
John 15:15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.
Both David and Jonathan were variant warriors who had taken stands of faith against Israel’s enemies. In the course of time , their hearts were being knit together and they became good friends – Jonathan loved him as his own soul. In order to seal their covenant of friendship, he gave him princely marks of honor; his robe, tunic and sword as part of his apparel.
Our Lord Jesus has thus shown his love to us; that he stripped himself to clothe us, emptied himself to enrich us – he did more than Jonathan in that he clothed himself with our rags, whereas Jonathan did not put on David’s. He endeavored to perpetuate this friendship with you and me.
True love desires to be constant. Those who love Christ as their own souls will be willing to join themselves to him in an everlasting covenant .(Matthew Henry Commentary).
When we enjoin ourselves to Jesus, the Father seats us with Christ in the heavenly places of royalty far above all principality, rulers and dominion. May we always endeavor to strengthen our friendship with Jesus. Jesus calls us friends and not servants.
