1 Ch 4:10 — “And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ‘Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!’ So God granted him what he requested.”
Jabez was a man marked by pain—his very name meant sorrow. Yet he chose not to be defined by his beginning. Instead, he cried out to God for a blessing that would shift his identity and future. And Scripture affirms: “God granted him what he requested.” One sincere prayer became the turning point in his story.
He asked for more than comfort—he asked for change. He desired divine blessing, expanded influence, God’s presence, and protection from causing pain. His request was bold, but not selfish—it was a cry for transformation. Jabez teaches us that we can ask God not just to help us survive, but to help us live differently.
Many today are limited by past labels and inherited pain. But like Jabez, we can seek the blessing that changes the narrative. God still answers prayers that come from hearts longing for renewal. Don’t accept the name pain gave you—ask for the name purpose can give.
