Pro 17:5 (KJV) – “Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.”
It is a moral failure to find humor in the hardship of another. When we laugh at someone else’s pain—whether through gossip, viral videos, or social ridicule—we reveal a heart disconnected from the compassion of Christ. Proverbs 17:5 is a sobering reminder that mocking the vulnerable isn’t just bad taste—it’s an offense against God Himself. To ridicule another’s sorrow is to mock the One who made them.
Job 30:1 paints a vivid picture of this cruelty: “But now they that are younger than I have me in derision…” Job, once honored, became the object of scorn when calamity struck. His story reminds us that the tables can turn quickly—and those who mock today may mourn tomorrow. Instead of laughter, let us learn to weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15), knowing that shared sorrow is a mark of spiritual maturity.
True character is revealed not in how we treat the strong, but in how we respond to the weak. Jesus never entertained Himself at another’s expense—He healed, uplifted, and restored. Let us follow His example by choosing empathy over entertainment and grace over ridicule. What we mock today may be the very trial that humbles us tomorrow.
