Mt 16:15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Prior to this question, Jesus asked the disciples who the multitudes said He was. The disciples were quick to give their responses. The Master was not doing a public opinion poll for He knew who He was and His mandate. The response varied as many expressed their varied views according to the diverse judgment of the crowd who followed Him perhaps because of His miracles.
Christ moved from the crowd to the disciples who were His followers thus in close proximity. They were at advantageous position compared to the multitude. They were expected to know better. The answer required a personal revelation of who Christ was. He expected a full confession of His divinity.
At times the warmth of fellowship ceases and we have to stand on our own. What will help at such times is your personal relationship with Christ. Do you know Him at a personal level?
Peter’s answer was true and to the purpose. He got it right and upon that revelation, the church was built. We need to check the foundation upon which we build our faith. When the storm comes, what will keep us standing is our personal investment in His kingdom in knowing Him.
We say that we believe in Him, but in whom do we believe? He expects the same confession today ; “Thou art Christ, the son of the living God.” … He is our saviour, Redeemer, provider and deliverer…. Hallelujah!
