1Ki 18:30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.
This was during the Mount Carmel contest. The priests of Baal would call on their god while Elijah would call on the name of the Lord. The one who answered by fire would be acknowledged as God. The Priests of Baal prepared their sacrifice and called upon Baal the whole morning, but he did not answer. They called and cried the whole afternoon, even cutting themselves to get his attention, but there was no response.( Don Maclafferty)
Then Elijah called the people together and repaired the altar of the Lord which had been torn down. He reconstructed the altar with twelve stones which represented the twelve tribes of Israel. After that he dug a trench around it and poured water on it. When he called upon the Lord, the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, the dust and it licked up the water.
Today we have broken altars everywhere… at home, work place and even places of worship. Our homes are no longer places of worship but places of dining , fighting and entertainment. Regardless of how scattered the stones may be, no matter how fragmented and disoriented the place may be, we can repair those altars again and make them places of worship. The beauty of it all is that when we repair the altars, we will experience divine visitations.
