1 Sam 3:1 The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.
This was the beginning of a special time in the history of Israel. God was about to call Samuel to lead the nation of Israel. However, the preceding events show us some of the reasons why God chose to call the boy directly and not through the Priest Eli.
The word of the Lord was scarce/rare those days and not many visions. Eli who was ninety eight years old, did not have an intimate relationship with the Lord . When confronted to discipline his son’s who were vile in the temple,he never did so.
The word of the Lord is no longer a preserve of a few today. God has provided a “feast of his word and not a “famine”. Today’s famine of the word of God is self – imposed. Let us activate the power of the word of God in our lives by reading and actualizing it daily. God’s word possesses the power of creation, sanctification, preservation and salvation. Like newborn babies longing for their mothers milk, so we need to long for the word.
