(I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE BIRTHRIGHT,I AM HUNGRY RIGHT NOW!)
Ge 25:30-34
He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.)
Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”“Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.
Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.
Esau being a game hunter had come from the fields hungry to find his twin brother Jacob cooking some lentil soup and bread. This was the very thing that Esau desperately needed to satisfy his very pressing need which was hunger. In his eyes, he was about to die if he didn’t get food at that time. Jacob being very cunning and crafty, pegged a price tag on this temptation and Esau readily obliged; not caring about the value of his birthright which he despised. His greed and hunger for the “NOW MOMENT SATISFACTION” saw him loose an eternal privilege that was so precious, compared to a bowl of lentil soup and bread.
This very act displeased the Lord. During the blessing by Isaac, Esau sought for his blessing with tears but it was too late. The opportunity cost lost was so high that his descendants, the Edomites became a vexation to the Israelite camp in many years later and the Lord did not love them as he did Jacob.
Today we are faced with immense pressures to satisfy certain needs, some which may appear very pressing. Urges to compromise our position as kingdom citizens to sell our birthrights in form of giving bribes in order to get jobs, business opportunities, get out of trouble with authorities, access crucial services are on the rise. Others get involved in adultery , fornication and slander in order to attain certain favours. All these are “bowls of lentil” soup and morsels of bread. We need to stand strong amidst these temptations and like Jesus, we will overcome. The Lord will provide a way of escape so that we do not fall under the temptations.
Ro 8:37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
